One of the best views over the town and surrounding country is from the mirador (overlook) southeast of town. Take Callejón del Chorro, the track leading directly downhill from here, and turn left at the bottom to reach El Chorro , the spring where San Miguel was founded (note the fountain and public washing tubs).

El Mirador is a place both day and night offers one of the best views of San Miguel de Allende, is a must to take pictures and take a nice souvenir of the city point.

Whether you're looking to pick up some handcrafted souvenirs or just browse the stalls, Mercado de Artesanías deserves a spot on your list. Handily located in the center of the city, this artisan market is an explosion of color; stalls fill an indoor covered area and spill out onto the streets, with plenty of craft shops dotting the surrounding area too. You'll find everything from goods with traditional La Catrina motifs (the skeleton woman synonymous with Day of the Dead) to hand-painted alebrije sculptures, alongside silverware, ceramics, jewelry, embroidered textiles and various other crafts. You might even spot an artisan at work, painting away.

San Miguel's 88-hectare botanical garden is also a wildlife and bird sanctuary. Pathways head through wetlands and magnificent areas of cacti and native plants. The deep canyon at the bottom boasts the eponymous freshwater spring, El Charco del Ingenio. Don't miss the Conservatory of Mexican Plants, which houses cacti and succulent species. Two-hour tours (in English) depart every Tuesday and Thursday at 10am (M$80). Birdwatching tours take place at 9am on the first and third Wednesday of the month.
